Guided Response Blog
This week I’m going to blog about the circumstances the surrounds African Americans in the inner city who receive welfare. Everyone has a story to tell coming from what I like to call the hood. Here’s how my story and how it relates with the struggles of Precious and her mother. Well growing up in the hood was difficult facing hardships of once a month income coming from the government, as well as provided food stamps, and on good months we get government cheese. How this relates to the book is how Precious and her mother are in poverty now, they wait on a once a month check from the government as well. The problem with this is that some people become content with receiving welfare and live life ghetto fabulous. Which in the books case it is Precious mother who lives a ghetto fabulous life; to just sit around all day with the TV to entertain her. For most people who fall under this category who are just lazy at all right think it’s acceptable to receive handouts from the government and make that life I think is totally ridiculous. One example on repeated trends comes from the book where Precious mother keep urging Precious to go to welfare herself to sign up for a check. Even though this book it’s based out of the 1980’s there are still cases that are current today. I believe if we as the African American culture have to recognize and change for the better of our future with the next couple of generations.

The book I am reading is titled Precious based on the novel Push. When I first started to read into this book I was instantly comfortable with print where it didn’t hurt my eyes. Also the way the book is stuctured and laid out is not so bad at all. With my lack luster ways of reading and just plainly hating to read period this book does a good job of keeping the reader at full attention. Which I would say in my case a hard thing to do. One thing this book has in it is a whole lot of cursing. I think like every other line or so has a curse word. Plus this reading is so similar to my everyday hearing people around me talk. With the ghetto slang it uses really puts me in the mind set of just a regular conversation with black people. In a way it’s a bad look on the black race as a whole but most times the truth hurts and when it comes to the light it really sucks. I’ve also seen the movie too I know the Mary character actress name is Monique. She started as a comdiean then a few movies. Now she a star because the movie was such a hit. I couldn’t finish the movie the first time I saw it. I began to get chills just seeing the realness the actors protrade on how some black act. I hope the book is just as interesting as it’s reviews of it showed.

Week 3 Post
Blogging about my reading is a little difficult because I don’t read often. I guess you can call me a just enough reader. I generally read textbooks for assignments, chapters for class notes, and articles for papers. It’s weird because I feel no excitement to read or have the imaginary desires to. Usually I would choose a television show to watch instead of reading a book. I’ve done it pretty much since third grade. Sports were my number one interest I participated in year round athletics. So now I wanted to tweak my habit of just enough to overachieving. It sounds a bit much but it’s more of a self challenge than it appears. I’m a very prideful individual who comes from a prideful family. I don’t want to come off as cocky though but it’s the itch I have to scratch. My wish is to evolve into a more active reader. Reading when talked about seems to be important in most people around me. I just wasn’t into it the way I need to be to become successful. I care wholeheartedly about putting together a reading process that not only can help me pass this class but also develop a pattern that’s going to carry on. With hard work and dedication I have good vibes about my decision to want to change. I hope with my develops I can show off what is a important key in my success, and ultimately prove that once again whatever I put my mind to I can do it.
